How much time do you spend researching new methods vs working on methods?

I have been feeling at a loose end for several weeks now. I feel like a noobie again :) as I don't know what I am going to work on next.

For a couple probably a few years now I had a clear path in my mind and was able to work on it without much thought. Porn upload and twitter, my main sources. So it was just a case of making them work, which took a long time but I think it was easy to feel I was on the right track as at the time when I began I already knew many people having success in these areas from all the huge threads on bhw at the time.

Now as I am looking for the new project/s to work on the water seems much more muddy. The terrain seems a lot more hidden by the fog of war, much less clear what is working for people. I noticed this change on bhw over the last couple of years (I lurked). People seem to keep their cards a lot closer to their chest now as to what is working and there doesn't seem to be as many success threads around.

Maybe I have not looked hard enough yet - I didn't browse the forum like that for a long time because of what I said above, that I had a couple of things I knew I had to work on and they took up all my time so wasn't on the lookout - but now as I dip back in looking with fresh eyes things certainly seem less transparent than they used to be.

And yes, of course, noone spells things out from a-z but it doesn't have to be a black and white thing with 'total spoonfeeding' vs 'no info exchanged whatsoever'. The whole point of the forum is sharing knowedlge between fellow marketers for success right?

Just seems a lot more detective work is needed now days.

Lol, I just realised what I wrote had little to do with the title, but it ties in in that I am rusty at reading the forums with an eye for finding a good method and those are the thoughts that have come to mind as I have begun looking again.

This has been a really big issue for me personally. Being caught up in the "shiny new things"-syndrome. I guess the shift came when I finally realized that I should stop searching for the secret sauce and just start executing. And trust me it feels much better, finally starting to make progress.

Stop searching for methods.
Start looking for problems.
Then solve those problems.
Profitability.

Problems you can solve:

Affiliate marketers with non-converting affiliate pages, business owners with no social media following or authority, freelance designers with few or little clients.

People with proven business models, but have no capital to scale up.

People with limited capital to build a real business, so they keep starting shitty little side hustles.

Fat people with limited or no mobility that want to lose weight without going to the gym or exercising from home.

Lonely people that want to meet someone special, but hate socializing.

Parents that want to ensure their kids get into the best college with very little debt or borrowing.

People want to improve their website ranking in Google, but don't want to risk $500 /month for 6 months and get no results because the person was selling garbage SEO bought from fiverr for $20/month

Etc. etc.

Problems are all around you.

OPEN YOUR EYES AND HELP SOMEONE. Just 1 person. Then find another person and help them... before you know it you'll have a business.

@IamNRE is correct solving needs always make money. But they are boring to run as a business. Providing wants are far more interesting and lucrative.

To answer your question, in my case 90% of my time is spent in r&d. When i get it running smoothly i bring in a va / automate the day to day running and move onto the next thing.

But it depends on your circumstances. If you really need the money to live on you cannot afford to experiment as much.

I would argue that even when you're catering to "wants" instead of "needs" you're still solving problems for people.

"I want that new iphone, but I can't afford the $999 price tag".... you come along and offer to lease it to them for $50/month for 24 months.... you just solved a "want" problem.

"I want something interesting to do while I'm on the toilet" .... you come along and offer them an entertaining youtube video or stupid lil game they can play for 5 min at a time. Problem solved.

You guys got me wrong if you saying I sat around reading all day and not executing. I went the opposite way, I was so focused on 2 methods for several years I have now forgotten what else is out there and that is what I am looking to now. It was actually hard for me to research lately since I didn't do it for so long. I need to do some research now to have some ideas for new methods.

Each week consists of 7 days. Split them, dedicate at least 1 day for rest, no work at all (quick check and quick response is OK if you know prioritizing) and 1 day for research. Leave the remaining 4-5 days for plan execution. Also keep an eye on related forums (like BHW, XBiz (for adult nieche), etc.), so you can stay updated on trends.

You can play a safe game, but this is a little bit like gambling or like the expeditions during history. Of course that there is a risk, and likely that the reason why you can't really find success stories because the lucky few - who knows after how many fails - have found the working recipe. And they prefer to keep that recipe for themselves...

Unlike what most people would say here, I have been more profitable when looking for new methods than excuting them. I have the fortune to have a team of people (5 at the moment) that will test most of the methods I "find". That way i can continue to do some
more research and that usually pays off very well. I am not saying every method is excuted to its fullest but they bring enough gains to our heads above water. I do feel overwhelmed sometimes by having to deal with so many new things and projetcs all the time, but I guess that since that's what has wroked for me in the past, there is no reason to change it now.
